I'm glad to hear they're still there.

I also noticed that the songbirds in the vicinity of HUP *did not like* when medical helicopters came zooming in to land on the roof of HUP or CHOP. I guess they always had one eye on the sky above because of the legit danger of predation from hawks, so they reacted with alarm when a big helicopter suddenly appeared overhead.Donnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08957909537747201950noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105891964864613564.post-10372136663714072512011-05-22T11:58:10.786-04:002011-05-22T11:58:10.786-04:00so wonderful we can share what we see in the sky a...so wonderful we can share what we see in the sky and view the closer result on cam...then have those in the know explain this behavior to us.
Thank You So much for all the effort.....aKuna Kumarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14514557492410282681noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105891964864613564.post-35118151781641343642011-05-22T10:40:06.711-04:002011-05-22T10:40:06.711-04:00Every time I think I couldn't be more happy be...Every time I think I couldn't be more happy being a Philly resident, something like this story just adds to it. This is absolutely amazing! I saw a wildlife program on a PBS channel showing a male Peregrine launching himself from a cliff nest with eyasses in it, to "warn" a Red-tail that got too close in the same way that you described, Erik, but without the back-up forces that our Red-Tail haggards had. Thank you for sharing your story.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105891964864613564.post-47665284484956113762011-05-20T13:47:03.720-04:002011-05-20T13:47:03.720-04:00Wow, can't believe I read this post this morn...Wow, can't believe I read this post this morning and got to see the same thing later in the day. I work at the Hopsital of the Universityof Penn and we've had a pair of nesting hawks here for years. I'm not sure how many but at least 5-6. I've often wondered if the Franklin Institute redtails are descendents of our birds. They love to perch on the top of one of the buildings right across from my office. Its called the Irvine Auditorium and has a tall spire with many perch-worthy extensions. They also sometimes chill out on the weather vane. My first sign of spring each year happens in February when the pair start "getting busy." Anyway, today I looked out the window and saw a falcone dive bombing one of our haggards ! What a coincidence or is this the same falcone trying to be tough with all the city hawks ?
Amazing
Eileen
FairmountAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105891964864613564.post-73881833596758576042011-05-18T21:57:02.343-04:002011-05-18T21:57:02.343-04:00This is the 2nd year in a row with Peregrines nest...This is the 2nd year in a row with Peregrines nesting in Philly. This year they are on City Hall. I think they were on a different building the year before. In fact there was just an article posted on WPVI.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105891964864613564.post-62033337890388137982011-05-18T19:58:19.286-04:002011-05-18T19:58:19.286-04:00This is actually good news, to me. When renovations began, it disturbed the birds and they moved to the Bell Atlantic (now Verizon) tower. There was even a closed-circuit camera on the nest that could be viewed in the lobby. (This was in the days before streaming video on the internet was available.)

But the last I heard of those birds was in 2001. They didn't return to that nest site after that summer, and from then until now I hadn't heard of any Peregrines being in the city. I'm glad they're around. Though I hope that they and our red-tailed hawk family give another a wide berth!Donnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08957909537747201950noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6105891964864613564.post-34537796320614314482011-05-18T19:50:02.654-04:002011-05-18T19:50:02.654-04:00Wow!
