I'll write up a longer post this evening with more details.
Congratulations to the Franklin Institute hawks!
Since 2009, there has been a Red-tailed hawk nest on a window ledge at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. A live-feed camera allows thousands of people in the USA and around the world to watch the eggs hatch, and then observe the feeding and care of the young hawks until they fledge in mid June. Despite losing two mates, T1 and T2, to accidents, the female, Mom, has remained in the area, and there are high hopes that she and her new partner, T3, will nest together in 2015. Della Micah
Just saw this insane interaction between a red tailed and the Bald Eagles at Duke farms. I hope the FI hawks are smarter than this. Incredible. If John Blakeman sees this, I hope he'll comment on whether this suicidal behavior is rare....

I saw that too - just makes no sense, and very disturbing. I will ask JB for his thoughts.
DeleteThanks. Anxious to hear what he has to say.
DeleteHe did see that video... he said it was an immature red tail who may not have realized how large the bald eagle was because it was in the nest bowl.
ReplyDeleteI think he said something about .. well, in essence... maybe it's better for the gene pool that that particular red tail is gone... not in those exact words... but something to like that.
Darwin Awards for birds, I guess.
DeleteThanks for the info.
Love the story descriptions you put along with these birds daily life. They are awesome. Followed this site last year and will again this time. Too funny, dad observing the egg as if it is his first. Probably is. He's a good dad..lat year proved it!
